What to Expect During a Newborn Photography Session with Smile Baby Photography

As a newborn photographer in Gisborne, New Zealand, I understand that welcoming a new baby into your family is a monumental occasion. Capturing these early moments is a priceless way to preserve your baby’s first days. If you’re considering a newborn photography session but aren’t sure what to expect, this guide will walk you through the entire process, ensuring you and your baby are prepared and relaxed.
Why Choose a Professional Newborn Photographer?
Choosing a professional newborn photographer ensures that your baby’s safety and comfort are a priority. In addition to delivering high-quality images, I use techniques that guarantee your baby feels secure throughout the session.
With over 12 years experience I've learnt to follow baby's cues, which helps make the session go smoothly.
When they have wind, need feeding, starting to fall asleep or just need some mum cuddles and it now doesn't take me long to capture all the images I need in a shorter amount of time, making the session a lot more easier for the family.

The Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot
The ideal time for a newborn photography session is when your baby is between 5 to 14 days old. During this time, babies are still sleepy and naturally curl up, making it easier to capture those adorable, peaceful poses.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session
A relaxed and well-prepared environment is key to a successful session. Here's how to prepare:
  • Feed your baby Baby may need feeding at any stage of the session, Something to be aware of if you’re breast/bottle feeding
  • Bring nappies and maybe a pacifier, just in case. I have props and clothing available, but feel free to bring any items of sentimental value.
  • Dress yourself in layers for the session in my studio. The room will be warm to keep your baby comfortable, so you may want to dress accordingly.

What Happens During the Session?
The session typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours. This gives us plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and positioning your baby without feeling rushed. Here’s how it breaks down:
  • Posed Shots: I’ll guide your baby into gentle, safe poses using soft props and blankets. Each pose is carefully planned to highlight your baby’s features.
  • Session Flow: My sessions are totally baby led, I will be following their cues if they need parent cuddles I'll do the family photographs or are happy enough to be posed alone, They are the most important person in the room.
  • Lifestyle Shots: I’ll capture natural moments of you and your family interacting with your newborn, I've set up the studio to look homely and comfortable for the family.
  • Feeding and Breaks: Don't worry if your baby needs breaks. These sessions are completely baby-led, allowing for plenty of time to feed and comfort them as needed.

What to Bring to Your Newborn Photoshoot
While I provide most of the necessary items, here are a few things you are welcome to bring along:
  • Favorite blanket or toy for a personal touch.
  • Family heirlooms like a knitted hat or vintage quilt.
  • Outfits if you have something special in mind, though most babies are photographed in minimal clothing or wraps.

What Happens After the Photoshoot?
After the session, I’ll begin processing and editing the images. This process typically takes up to 2 weeks. Once completed, you’ll receive all the best images on an heirloom USB, both in high resolution and low res for social media etc.

FAQs About Newborn Photography Sessions
1. What happens if my baby is fussy during the photoshoot? Don’t worry! Newborn sessions are completely baby-led. We’ll take breaks for feeding, cuddles, and calming as needed. There isn't a baby I cannot photograph, they all have different needs, I've had them all.
2. What should I wear for the family shots? Neutral tones and simple outfits are best. Avoid busy patterns, as they can distract from your baby. I’m happy to provide wardrobe guidance in advance. Lighter colours make your skin look nice whereas blacks and greys can make your skin a little washed out sometimes
3. Can siblings or pets be included in the photoshoot? Absolutely! Including siblings or pets can create heartfelt, family-centered images. Let me know in advance, so we can plan accordingly. Children will have to be watched by you as I will be busy with baby. Bring snacks for children, as it can be a little long for them but usually they are fine.
4. How long does it take to receive the final images? You can expect to receive your edited images within 2 weeks after the session. I will notify you when the gallery is ready to pick up.
